Hi there, I have looked at all the postings you and your readers wrote. I think that you give sage advice. My question is I live in Naples, Florida and I totally hate it here. I have been here for 24 years and want to move to California. I went to Santa Monica when I was a child and have been to San Fran 5 times. I fell in love with that place and Calli in total. I have a BA in History. However, I have no real money to speak of and want to know what you think about how about going to find a job? Also, a place to live. I have 2 small dogs that do not weight 10 pounds together. They are not yappers. Just good little doggies. What do you suggest for me? I am not even sure you read this anymore? Thank you in advance for your help.
Tristan
Hi,
I posted a comment on March 6 on your Moving to California post. Wanted to know if you could please remove it. Thanks so much.
Terrance,
I’m 19 and I am just funishing up my last year of college, I have realized how fast life is taking off and I feel i am in no way ready for what’s coming, but I can’t wait for it to happen, because I love a challenge. Today I was browsing google for colleges in southern california, san luis obispo area, and I ended up browsing housing, and expenses. I started reading your article between washington and california and I appreciate the solid understandable points you make. I live in Oregon, and I feel i still and very immature towards being a succesful person.
My parents pay for most everything, nice car, nice place, nice clothes, but I feel it will make me dependent in the later years. I keep telling myself I want to get out of this, but I don’t know if i can, because i get wrapped up in that easy life again. I repeat to myself “no risk no reward” so I’m thinking California would be the place to move and try my chance at change. I would live about three hours away from my grandparents, do you think this will still be to close to family, or should I stay in Oregon and milk off my parents for as long as I can?? I just need your opinion?
Nick
Nick,
There is nothing wrong with letting your parents get you up on your feet but it sounds like you feel like you will become dependent on them. If you are sincere about your desire to really make something of yourself, than nothing can be worse for you than being dependent on someone else. It may seem minor, but people have a tendency to stay with what is comfortable. It can get mighty comfortable when you don’t have to pay any bills and you are living off of someone else’s money.
So if you can do it, I say go at it on your own. I started my life out of college living in NYC and was spending everything I earned on rent. Since graduation, I have not taken any money from my parents and I have never lived at their home. It is this independence and self reliance that has, in part, led me to be successful
Hi Mr. Terrence,
) and failed 2 math classes that I’ll have to make up from summer school starting a few weeks.
Sorry I don’t know what to call you by since our age gap is quite large. Reading a bit of your blogs really made me think about my future…well, so called ‘future’.
I am absolutely miserable right now, I am currently in my junior year of high school and my grades are a disaster. I missed a lot of school days ( personal reasons) and my GPA last quarter was .8 GPA (yes, I can’t believe it
I want to redeem myself by getting good grades next year but I think that will still not help me with getting into a good college as my freshman and sophomore year isn’t that great either. The question is, if I go to community college, do well there, transfer to a 4 year uni, graduate with my degree. Will I be able to bring myself together to the future I want to have? Your advice will be deeply appreciated.
Oh, almost forgot. I’m planning for a marketing major. What do you think of it?

hi- i am a reporter working on a story about your generationand job prospects- would love to talk to you. u can reach me by email… thanks!
Hi,I’ve been enjoying your blog!
My husband and I are planning to move to California, next year, when we get our 2012 tax refund.we usually get back about 6000. .we are planning this move for a years time.we also are not moving here with no money, aswe have guarenteed income from ssi, for whr I2,000. PR month.mwe will auctially bring in more, once we get down there. We also plan to secure a place of our own before moving there.I think it wld be best to go thru a property management company and then we just have to. Worry about getting our belongings there.the reason we want to move there is becouse we have been stuck in Washington our whole lives, lived on the eastern side of state as well, and there’s just nothing here!my husband lived in sacremento area for five years as a teenager/young adult and he loved it.I have severe fibromylgia the constant rain and cold makes my illness much worse.I like big cities I auctually do better in bigger communities,I adjust well to change.as long as I know we will have our own place to live and be able to afford to survive that’s all I care about!believe it or not, Washington state is very expensive to live, this is becouse if you are far from a large city, you are stuck with only a few places to shop and you don’t have many choices.just to go to Olympia,I’m spending 50 a trip on gas, just to go to Cisco and wincing, and then I’m so stressed Bering far from hone I tend to rush and not take my time,so if I don’t get everything I need then,I’m screwed bcuz I can’t come back again for a month.!I’m si k of it! I want to be in a median sized town that’s about Olympia size, that has a lot of stores, resteraunts etc but close to a big city like la.what do you suggest?I looked on internet and found lots of little city’s on outskirts of la that have affordable rental housing, good nieghborhoods and schools.I’m all for southern Cal,my husbands al for northern Cal.what do you suggest.?we are set on this!even our kids are excited to get the hell outta here and go someplace sunny and warm with some civalization.!we have one small dog and two cats.we have a good car(a 200 GMC Jimmy) that will be paid off before we move.I would appreciatte any advice how to do this move as smoothly as possible.thankuou!
