Taxes and the Census

Do you think people don't really think about taxes? Look at the latest census numbers to come out and the effect it has on Congressional seats.

New York-2
Ohio-2
Illinois-1
Iowa-1
Louisiana-1
Massachusetts-1
Michigan-1
Missouri-1
New Jersey-1
Pennsylvania-1
Arizona1
Georgia1
Nevada1
South Carolina1
Utah1
Washington1
Florida2
Texas4

There are seven states that don't have any state income tax.  These include  Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.  Of the eight states that actually gained seats, four of them are included in that list.  The two that gained the most, Texas and Florida, are some of the most income tax friendly states.   Some of the least friendly states, New York and New Jersey, are the states that are losing people on a relative basis.  of course, this is not the only factor causing this shift.  There also seems to be some correlation between warmer and colder states, but it is pretty interesting when you look at it through the lens of people trying to avoid paying taxes.   This is exactly what you would expect.  People protesting with their feet.

  1. It is all cyclical. A lot of companies are now moving back to Detroit because the cost of living has gone down so much. In another decade or so, texas cities will start to get dilapidated and people's job will force them to move to the places they were originally.

  2. While population counts are critical to those and other federal programs, other formulas which require states to maintain current levels of funding and minimum allocation provisions can mitigate the effect of population changes.

  3. I would just like to add that, while unfortunate, there are still communities that evade the census because they are under the impression that if they are counted it will have a negative effect on their community and their lives, like new taxes and many other things that I do not fully understand. If any has a platform to educate these people about the importance of the census, please do your part to make them understand it is in their best interest
